Unscrambling Creativity Measurement: An Invitation to Better Formalize the Domain Generality-Specificity of Creativity with Psychometric Modeling
By Nils Myszkowski in Psychometrics Creativity Measurement
What it’s about
In this paper, we discuss how the domain generality-specificity debate in creativity research can be clarified by explicitly modeling measurement structure, instead of relying on underspecified score interpretations.
Abstract
Creativity assessment often conflates multiple sources of variance, making it difficult to determine what a given score truly reflects. This article argues for a more formal psychometric treatment of the domain generality-specificity question in creativity measurement. By framing the problem through explicit latent-variable and measurement-model perspectives, the paper highlights how competing theoretical positions can be tested more directly and compared more transparently. The goal is to improve construct interpretation and strengthen cumulative evidence in individual-differences research on creativity.
