Using Visual Aesthetic Sensitivity Measures in Museum Studies
By Nils Myszkowski in Psychometrics Aesthetics Museum studies
What it’s about
In this paper, we examine the use of visual aesthetic sensitivity measures in museum contexts and outline psychometric issues that matter when selecting and interpreting these instruments.
Abstract
Visual aesthetic sensitivity has long been assessed with tests intended to capture individual differences in judgments of artistic quality. This article discusses how such measures can be used in museum studies and what kinds of validity evidence are needed for defensible interpretation. It reviews key conceptual and methodological considerations, including construct definition, score meaning, and context-specific use in museum experience research. The paper offers guidance for researchers interested in integrating psychometric rigor into museum-related assessment of aesthetic abilities.
