Anger and Sadness as Adaptive Emotion Expression Strategies in Response to Negative Competence and Warmth Evaluations
By Nils Myszkowski in Personality Social psychology Emotion
What it’s about
In this paper, we study when anger or sadness expressions are more socially effective after negative interpersonal evaluations.
Abstract
This research examines the social functionality of negative emotion expression following evaluations of competence or warmth. Across studies, the effectiveness of anger versus sadness depended on the type of negative evaluation received, supporting the idea of emotion-expression congruency in interpersonal contexts. The findings highlight how emotional responses can serve adaptive social functions rather than being uniformly detrimental.
