Born and raised in a musical family - his father was banjoist and guitarist -, folk-rock singer-songwriter Nils Myszkowski grew up to the sounds of American roots music and rock n'roll, especially Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Little Feat and Townes Van Zandt. After learning guitar at 11, he spent his high school years playing in a variety of local bands, as a guitarist, a mandolinist, and a dobroist.

At the age of 18, as his band exploded, he taught himself how to sing and started crafting his own material, with a new backing band, and characterized by restless band member turnover. Though he sometimes played solo, the band supported him through most of his gigs, helping him produce his first solo record ("Lyre") on the road.
